Respiratory Therapy: A medical specialty responsible for treating, examining, and rehabilitating patients with acute or chronic respiratory diseases.

The great development in medicine during the past decades has emphasized the role of the respiratory care specialist in reviewing tasks related to respiratory diseases, from evaluation and diagnosis to treatment and follow-up under the direct or indirect supervision of doctors. The profession of respiratory care requires the practitioner to take a leading role in practicing the tasks required of him in order to provide a better service to patients.

The idea of ​​respiratory care started in the sixties of the last century under the name of inhalation therapy. With the invention of the technique of artificial respiration and the presence of studies , medical research in addition to the increasing methods of treatment of chest diseases and methods of providing them to patients, the idea of ​​finding specialization gradually emerged through several names until it became separate under supervision of its practitioners. It is one of the modern specialties globally and it is still rare. The quality of hospital care, especially intensive care departments, might be measured by the number and efficiency of respiratory care practitioners.

Respiratory care practitioners’ tasks

Examination and evaluation of patients suffering from respiratory diseases by conducting specialized diagnostic tests that include lung function tests, sleep planning, heart and lung stress tests, blood gas measurement and other tests.

Work with the rest of the medical team to diagnose patients suffering from acute crises of shortness of breath as the respiratory therapist undertakes the process of drawing blood from the artery. This is done to measure the level of blood gases and also protect the airway to ensure that the patient has sufficient air and oxygen, as well as inserting a tube Ventilators in the trachea through the nose or mouth if required.

Dealing with ventilators in the intensive care departments and assisting doctors in building the treatment strategy by making the necessary adjustments to ensure the stability of blood gases and thus protect the lung and heart.

Training patients with asthma, pneumonia and chronic bronchitis to use expanding bronchial medications and measure their response to them.

Do chest exercises for patients who suffer from accumulation of phlegm in the respiratory tract, in order to ensure normal breathing after surgeries.

Participation as members of the Rapid Intervention Group for respiratory insufficiency in hospitals and core members of cardiac and lung resuscitation.

Contributing to raise awareness and education of patients and members of society about the various aspects concerned with the prevention of respiratory diseases and provision of appropriate methods of usage of treatments related to respiratory diseases.

Participate in home care for patients, follow-up and evaluation of the health situation, and provide preventive and rehabilitative advice.
